1964, The underground-train

Mine de plomb sur papier | Collection particulière

In this small pencil-drawing, made after an ordinary journey in the underground, Mennessons re-creates the impression of overcrowding : the vertical forms are packed together and being pushed, here to the right. The dense hatching of the lead-pencil, combined with the whites, turns a stifling underground journey into a well-balanced, graphic composition.
